UX for lasers Part 2. Scaling software globally.
A complex, inefficient and out-of-date software component was holding back the scalability of a powerful hardware system. We redesigned the user experience to propel this hardware system forward through a scalable software platform for internal and external customers.
Complex software components in need of modernising
The visual inspection system allows rail operators to carry out virtual inspections through high-resolution photographic and scanner data. As a train passes through a system, measurements generate a complete digital twin on screen, streamlining the maintenance workflow.
The hardware is vastly powerful but a complex software component in need of modernising to user expectations across continents was holding back the scalability of the platform as a service.
A series of discovery workshops
Our workshops with the product and engineering teams generated insights about how various users interface with the system.
Testing low-fidelity concepts with engineers (internal users) and customers (external users) revealed how each group values the system, how they use it and what they need from it to perform daily tasks efficiently. Their feedback guided the iterative development of a customised solution tailored to each user’s unique requirements, allowing internal product owners to prioritise roadmaps and implementation phases.
A scalable software platform with a modern UI
The result was a scalable software platform with a modern UI that provides value and efficiency to both major user groups & product teams.
For customers: quick access to alarm data and high-definition photographic imagery required to make critical decisions quickly. A simple interface to manage and configure systems themselves with less reliance on Siemens engineers.
For engineers: a clear overview of system yield to understand whether the system is performing to contractual specifications and provide effective technical support. Easily accessible data for in-depth analysis.
For product teams: visibility of highest priority features & strategic goals for delivering design & implementing system designs, focussing on highest value first.
